Proofs are Critical with Any Project

Posted by on in Prepress

Proofs are critical with any project, and there are many from which to choose. Below are the proofs we offer at CPC Solutions.

•  Soft Proof – This proof is posted and viewed online, which provides a great way to share a proof with multiple locations at the same time. Soft proofs are typically the least expensive. Although they are not accurate for color, they do provide a fast and easy way to proof your file after it has been preflighted and “ripped.”

•  Plotter Proof – These cost effective, low-end printed proofs are best for proofing trim lines, positioning, and pagination.

•  Oris Proof – These high quality proofs are calibrated to our presses and offer the best shot at accurate color. These should be used if your project is color critical. A plotter proof will always accompany an Oris proof.

•  Digital Proof – These proofs are essentially press proofs since they are printed on our Indigo 5600 digital press.

•  Variable Data Proof – It is essential to proof a variable data printed project with the actual data being used. We typically do this by showing several variants via soft proof, but it could also be done using several digital proofs.

•  Packaging Comps – For any die cut or packaging project, we create a comp using our new die less cutting table to give you a near exact representation of the final product, on the actual stock. We may also print the artwork on the comp by applying a thin film for ink adhesion.

The ParkMe App does exactly what it says. However, better results are found in larger cities, which will certainly cut down the amount of time you spend driving in circles.

Tips from the Trenches:

Proofs are not perfect. Most proofs are made on different machines using different inks using different substrates, compared to the intended final product. They may be very close, sometimes scary close, but never perfect.

We are ALL in SALES

Posted by on in Print Solutions

Whether we think so or not, at one point or another, we are all involved in the selling process. Therefore, it is useful to understand how to persuade a prospect, a client, or a colleague that meeting with you is important. When doing so, keep the acronym SALES in mind.

Short: Keep it short. Often, 60 minutes is the traditional default time frame, but most meetings can be more concise. Propose a 20 or 30 minute meeting time and stick to it. If the prospect is truly interested, they will ultimately make more time for you. Ascertain: How does the buyer benefit from a meeting with you? Ascertain their needs from research and discovery. In today’s world of abundant information, there is no excuse to be ill-informed. Listen: Listen to your prospect’s needs and problems and you will have meetings that are meaningful and productive. If the meeting is about your needs and problems, it will be apparent to the buyer. Empathy: Psychologist David McClelland’s Need for Achievement Theory found that people are motivated by three basic drivers: the need to achieve, the need for power, and the need for affiliation. Empathize by linking meeting requests to these motivations. Solve: When trying to secure a meeting, point out why meeting with you will help solve their problem today. If there is no problem to solve or no strong value proposition, why would they bother meeting with you at all?

Use these techniques to eliminate banding in gradients:

  • Use a gradient that changes at least 50% between two or more process components.
  • Increase the percentage of change in the gradient.
  • Add a Gaussian blur or Noise filter in Adobe Photoshop.
  • Avoid creating gradients that blend from a very dark color to white.

You Dream It - We Create It

Posted by on in Prepress

We have found that our new packaging equipment, knowledge, and software are making its way into many other areas of our clients’ businesses. These new capabilities have been a big hit in the direct mail sector as well as with companies needing custom, interactive print solutions.

The vertical piece below was conceptualized on a napkin; recreated in our CAD software; and ultimately sent electronically to our die-less cutting table, thus producing a real working mockup. The other piece in the collage below is our zip strip mailer, which works wonderfully as a direct mail solution.

If you dream up unique printed pieces and need a source to create it, please think of CPC Solutions.

Tips from the Trenches:

It all starts with data. When preparing your list for a direct mail campaign, try to keep each data point in a separate field and in consistent columns. Disheveled data will increase processing time and may be a recipe for disaster. Of course, if you need extra data work done, we are certainly there for you.

Great Design is Everyone’s Responsibility

Posted by on in Prepress

A key aspect of great design is type and layout. Take a look at an issue of Bloomberg Businessweek for an example of design abuse, albeit with great content. In the latest release from lynda.com, John McWade shares foundational graphic design techniques in Before & After: Things Every Designer Should Know. The focus of this week’s feature story is on the last few chapters on type.

Type is often taken for granted and underappreciated. Avoid type that is overused or common place and integrate type, so it becomes part art form. San-serif, serif and script may be used together while color, size and weight add to the beauty of designing with type.

Layout and type should dance with each other. Constraining your type to a rectangle, with rigid design, will detract from the beauty of the type itself and reduce the effectiveness of the message.

Using color, size and weight differences in the type has improved the design. In combination with the graphic elements, the design has become less like an encyclopedia and more like a work of art.

Many designers get stuck in the position of having more content than space. The next example shows how six articles virtually blend together making it less inviting. It doesn’t have to be this way.

With the use of bold, italic, serif and san-serif fonts, the design is more distinct. John McWade states, "These bold typographical contrasts are a good solution to this mundane project."

The training video on this topic may be found at lynda.com, which is a subscription based training website for most computer programs from Microsoft Office to Adobe Creative Suite, and so much more.

Tips from the Trenches:

TrueType fonts work best with variable data printing. To avoid compatibility issues, look for fonts that work on both Mac and PC. OpenType, TrueType and PostScript fonts are all suitable for commercial printing. Free fonts are mostly available for personal use only, although there are some that may be used commercially. As with anything, be aware of copyright laws and read the fine print, no pun intended. Font sources: dafont.com; fontsquirrel.com; linotype.com.

Awesome App:

The FontBook App contains over 730,000 typeface samples illustrating nearly 37,000 typefaces from over 8,000 font families. FontBook is the world’s most comprehensive typographic tool.

Interesting Integers:

More than 1,660 type designers are represented in FontBook.

Almost Famous Quote:

It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would never have multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. – Steve Jobs from his commencement speech to Stanford in 2005
